I have been trying for a long time to get a Windows 7 computer current on the updates.  I have just been letting it boot with failed updating since it is still usable.

But recently I have some luck getting successful installations, including some that had failed before (KB3118401, KB4539601, KB2538243).  So I will try again to get the others installed.

The 3 which still consistently do not install are   KB3068708    KB4503548    KB3080149.

Using the troubleshooter, two codes are generated:    Code 80070490 encountered unknown error and Code 643 encountered unknown error.

All advice appreciated.  At present, I am running  sfc /scannow.

IMO...any perception/appearance of updates installing for Windows 7...well, I would have to believe that those are just illusions.  I run Windows 7 in a dual-boot with Win 10...Windows 7 is truly an unsupported O/S today and there are no updates being issued by MS for such.

The fact that your install may appear to be installing "updates" of any kind...at any time...is just an illusion relating to the mechanics of the Windows Update mechanism.  If you look up the specific dates where any of those "updates" were issued...you would find them to be anything but current.

My approach is to ignore any activity in Win 7 that purports to be in the nature of an "update."  If I use a tool like Speccy to see the installation date of my Win 7 install...it reflects a date on which Win 7 installs may have been appropriately attempted by Win 7...but that date is long ago...and reflects the fact that I run Win 7 from a restored image that has no correlation to today's date.

The log created is 9,035 pages long, 1,612,729 words.

The message generated is:  Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

I tried downloading and installing these 3 updates again, and restarted, but they all failed.

KB3068708 and KB3080149 are Customer Experience Improvement Program (telemetry/datamining) updates and can be safely blocked/hidden.

KB4503548 is the installer for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8. This also isn't necessary if you don't have any software on your computer requiring it. (You can tell if it's required if a program you're trying to run errors out stating this version of .NET is missing.)

Do you have kb5039339 installed? You need it first before installing the newer updates.

Irrelevent; the OP was having issues with OLD updates being re-offered endlessly.
