Hi guys :) I am trying to install the new version of malwarebytes and it says I need to install some Windows 7 updates https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500004670861-Windows-2019-09-Security-Update-for-Windows-devices-running-Malwarebytes-home-products anyway I can't update the windows via windows update because it's broken. I remember that it happened before and I solved it with downloading offline update installers from windows website. I forgot the download site and searched the internet then I found https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/home.aspx When I write the code KB4474419 (code of the update) to the seach it shows updates but something Russian is written on description is this a fake windows site ? if so what is the real windows download site ?

can't update the windows via windows update because it's broken.

Is not broken the Servers have been Taken Off Line Due to Win 7 End Of Life on January 14, 2020.  No Further Updates Ever.

Your Update would be here : https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search.aspx?q=kb976932  as is possibly a thousand others plus SP2 and a thousand others.

Take End of Life as a matter of fact.  One Day you will be End of Life also and no one trying to update you.

BUT WAIT YOU CAN BE RESUSCITATED !!!! ===========

BUT you are still a threat to everyone on the internet and to your friends and family.  So IMHO do the below :

Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition : https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=299  Most like Windows. : https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_vera_cinnamon_whatsnew.php

FAQ's plus Minimum Requirements : https://linuxmint.com/faq.php

Less Command Line stuff than others. Check out the videos : https://www.google.com/search?q=linux+mint+cinnamon&client=firefox-b-d&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjzu4eQ-8L8AhViAzQIHSZ2D8oQ_AUoAnoECAEQBA&biw=1536&bih=671&dpr=1.25

It Comes with Software as well there is tons of Software available : Open Source : https://alternativeto.net/platform/linux/?license=opensource check free and ....

This is your best option and should consider it after what has been mentioned to you.

That is the correct URL for the official MS Windows Update site, and when I searched for that specific update, the two Windows 7 updates at the bottom of the list didn't show anything in Russian.

Hi:

As mentioned, Windows 7 has been out of support for many years and is - therefore - both obsolete and insecure, even with security applications.  Your data, financial information and overall security are at risk. Moreover, as you are experiencing first-hand, maintenance/reinstalling and recovery from a catastrophe (hardware failure, malware, ransomware, OS corruption) will become progressively harder over time, especially without advanced computing skills, a robust backup plan, etc.

Better, safer options include:

1) purchase of a new computer with a supported, modern Windows version;

2) upgrading hardware on the current rig & clean installing at least Windows 10 (you will need to purchase a legit license, as the free 7->10 upgrade path closed a long time ago) to buy time until Windows 10 support ends in October 2025;

3) converting this computer to Linux

Having said all that (& assuming you are not already infected, based on the redirect to a fake/Russian website): If you DO proceed with attempts to install MB on Windows 7, be aware that (as of now) it appears that only MB 4 supports Windows 7. The current version of MB (version 5) does not & probably will not.

You will need to get MB 4 from the offline installer, as AFAIK new program downloads will offer only MB 5.

That's a relief. I'm now confident that it's safe for you to use that site.

The reason for the Russian then French text is because you're probably using a VPN, Tor Browser, or some other type of proxy for your Internet connection.

Why are you trying to install Malwarebytes on a W7 machine ????

There really isn't any point, since it will not offer you any real protection against infection, and the reason for that is because, as you've already been told, you are using an out of support Operating System.

Because it's no longer being supported, its vulnerabilities are no longer being patched, which means they remain exploitable forever. No AV program will patch them, because that is not what they are designed to do, so your machine will continue to be open to any infection which seeks to exploit one of the many unpatched W7 vulnerabilities.

It's your choice whether you wish to remain with W7, but please do not think that you can protect yourself against infection going online with a W7 machine, because no matter what anyone else may tell you to the contrary, that is just not the case.

@VolumeZ:

Yes, that is only one necessary step, as explained in the link I provided earlier:
https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/274496-how-to-update-windows-7-to-the-latest-security-updates/

Having said that, as has been explained several times, all of these procedures amount to rearranging the proverbial deck chairs on a large, "unsinkable" ocean liner.

But that's certainly the OP's prerogative.

I use Windows 7 still.  As windows 10 is also getting close to end of life, I skipped it and built a new computer for Windows 11, as I had issues with some services that refused to work with anything less than Windows 10.  However, given the hi-jinks that goes on regularly with the Windows 11 experiment, I haven't been comfortable moving over it for all my daily work.

With that said, I was appalled one day when Malwarebytes updated, and hung while installing, as it no longer seemed to know the procedure for Windows 7.  I went through my collection of downloads that I have, and found an occasion where I had downloaded the full-installer version of Malwarebytes.  I was able to remove the failed-install of the 'new' Malwarebytes and install the old version.  Then I set it to not do auto-updating.  It works, and if I think there is something causing an issue, I run it.

For anti-virus, I still run the free Avast when it will install, and run, but on one of my Windows 7 systems, it will not install.  On that one I run this thing called Avira.

@steve.tabler:

Thanks for your input.

You don't say which "old" version of Malwarebytes you are using.
FWIW using an "old" version of Malwarebytes *without updates*, especially on an obsolete, unpatched, insecure version of Windows (Windows 7) is essentially worthless & a recipe for disaster.

This is especially so if (as your post suggests) you are only running the Free version. Malwarebytes free is only an on-demand scanner to help find & remove malware that has already made it onto your system. You would need the Premium (paid) version to help PREVENT infection.

Details about how best to run the latest version of Malwarebytes that supports Windows 7 may be found in the links I posted in Reply #6.

Having said all that, as has been explained several times, NO security application (up-to-date or not) can or will protect your obsolete OS from its unpatched vulnerabilities.

It's true you need KB4474419 to get Windows Update working properly in a fresh install of Windows 7, but you also need KB4490628 which provides the necessary servicing stack for those newer updates to come in.

As for that Russian text thing, that may be your VPN service causing that. The language shown in the Windows Update Catalog is determined automatically by your IP address. And if your VPN client happened to pick out a VPN server in Russia, voila.

I'm baffled by the sweeping assumptions being made without any factual basis.

The original poster neither mentions nor implies the use of a VPN. It's perplexing how some have concluded that 1+1 equals 3.

Moreover, the idea of someone using a VPN to connect to a Microsoft Update site, especially while running Windows 7—a system most VPN providers don't support well—is puzzling. NordVPN serves as a prime example of this.

Maintaining an updated and supported antivirus application should offer a decent level of protection. Individuals knowingly using outdated operating

systems are aware of the risks and should take extra precautions, particularly when browsing unfamiliar sites.

However, it's common knowledge that an "unpatched" OS like XP or even Windows 7, when connected to the internet for the first time without necessary service packs, becomes a target for attacks immediately. That's why installing all updates in offline mode is a must.

I suspect the OP's system has been compromised by WU appearing in a different language and not because they may be using a VPN or accessing the site via Tor—neither of which seems logical and there's no evidence to support this conclusion.

The pervasive pressure to abandon Windows 7 is apparent here, verging on gaslighting. I'm surprised no one has suggested switching to Linux the "ultimate" choice for those wired differently.
