What does it say precisely, and what edition of Windows 7?

you will likely need to use SP1 or set the BIOS to IDE mode instead of AHCI Mode under the hard drive settings.

See page 64 of the manual. Make sure you are set to Legacy and not UEFI. If the computer was previously using UEFI then the disk is GPT and 32bit will not install. You need an MBR disk in order to install 32bit.

https://dl.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_latitude_laptop/latitude-e6430_owner's%20manual_en-us.pdf

Start the install and press Shift + F10 when you are at the language page. This will open a command prompt window. Type the following commands.

diskpart

list disk

select disk X     X being the number of the drive you will be installing Windows to. Make sure you have the correct number. If there is only one disk it will be 0

clean                 wipes the disk by deleting the partition table

convert MBR     creates a MBR partition table. If you get an error ignore it

exit                    exits diskpart

exit                    exits command prompt

When you get to the screen asking for upgrade or custom install select custom. You should see your unallocated drive. Click the next button and Windows will automatically partition and format the the drive.

I recommend you download your chipset, graphics, and wifi drivers from the dell support site and copy them to a flash drive to install after Windows 7 is installed

Sorry, we cross-posted. I thought this was a clean install.

The IDE/AHCI is under the Advanced Options under Driver Controller or similar.

Why 32-bit?

You can also download the recovery ISO

You can run 32bit applications on Windows 7 64bit. I have done so for years and same on Windows 1064bit and same on Linux 64bit.
