Im at the end of my updates on windows 10 and need to switch to windows 11.  Someone told me that my computer cant handle 11 so I called a computer shop who said they can do it for around 250.00.  How do i know if my computer can handle windows 11 and is it easy to do myself?  What would be the approximate cost to do it myself?

We have no info about your current system.

Processor, RAM, and motherboard info would help.

What do you mean you're at the end of your updates?  Do you mean you are decidedly finished with Windows 10 and want to move onto Windows 11, or do you believe security updates for your Windows 10 have officially stopped after this month?

If it's the latter, that is not true.  The end-of-life date for Windows 10 is October of 2025, not 2024.  You're still safe to use Windows 10 for one more year before it will become truly necessary to make the jump to Windows 11.

As for how to find out how to determine on your own if your computer is qualified to run Windows 11, the easiest way usually to find out is to go to Windows Update in Settings and look for any messages about Windows 11 system requirements.  It will happily apply the upgrade for you right in there if your system qualifies.  There is no cost to upgrade as all legitimate Windows 10 installations are entitled to a free upgrade.

You can also use the Windows 11 Requirements Check Tool to check if your computer meets the requirements to run Windows 11.

Good luck! :)

If your computer can update to Windows 11 it will tell you in the Windows 10 update Window. And if it does say to can update all you need to do is first back up your personal data then click the update button.

You should see this if the computer cannot update to Windows 11.

You are welcome, chugg! :)

Sorry to hear that, but the computer store is saying that is because they can use an unofficial method to force install Windows 11 on your unsupported hardware.

You could do the above yourself, but it requires advanced skills and has several drawbacks, so I would NOT recommend it. :exclame:

As such, there is an article on Installing Windows 11 on devices that don't meet minimum system requirements.

And just out of curiosity, if I may ask, which of your hardware components does Windows 11 NOT support?

Maybe you could upgrade your hardware to upgrade to Windows 11.

Good luck! :)

Don't spend $250 to update a computer that is not supported by Windows 11. There is no guarantee you will still get Windows Security updates and you would still need to reinstall Windows 11 when a new feature update becomes available. You would not be able to update to the new feature update from within Windows 11.

Yes the shop is ripping you off at $250, they will simply use an unofficial build of Win 11 which has been modified unofficially to miss out the hardware checks for processor version TPM2 etc.

Thank you.  Im not sure which of my hardware components  Windows 11 doesnt support?  How can I find that out?  i can then make sure that the computer shop ads these components if possible.  And if not, I wont get it done. ive been buying refurbished toughbooks from this shop for about 7 years and they have always treated me fair.  My computer is a Panasonic CF-53

A quick search says that the computer is NOT compatible.

You are welcome, chugg! :)

Windows 11 does NOT support your Intel Core i5-2520M CPU, and because the CPU cannot be upgraded on a laptop, you need to purchase a laptop with an Intel Core 8th Generation and higher CPU, whereas your CPU is a 2nd Generation (i5-2520M).

Good luck! :)
