File Saving

Hello,

When trying to save a file, the, "Save as file type," is blank. If I save it with no option showing, it saves as a, PJP," Format. This has just started recently, before it would save as a,"JPG." Thanks.

Sounds like you have a minor system corruption.

When I was running XP and had system problems, I used a repair reinstall several times with good success. It will replace all the critical system files from the CD but leave your programs and data. Note that if you have a corrupted partition this will not help. It does not sound like your problem is that serious.

***I strongly suggest a backup of your data first would be a good idea.

Here is my canned tutorial:

 >Insert your XP Cd in the drive; note down your key number, you will be asked for it; reboot.
>The XP installation screen will appear.
>You will see a screen asking you if you would like a fresh install of XP or a repair install as follows:
 
The following options will appear on the screen:
"This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:
>To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
>To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
>To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3".

>>Do NOT choose the Recovery Console (#2), Choose the first option (Windows XP setup), press ENTER.

>You will now be asked if you want a Fresh install of Windows, or Repair an existing installation.
***===>  Choose to REPAIR an existing installation. DO NOT CHOOSE A FRESH INSTALL OF WINDOWS or you will lose all your data and programs.
   A repair install will replace only the critical system files and leave your data and programs untouched.

The rest is merely follow the prompts. Be aware that the computer will reboot several times so don't be startled when it does-just leave it alone and it will continue on.

***===> IMPORTANT-READ THIS: M/Soft set up a booby trap for the uninitiated; when the computer reboots, at the bottom of the screen it will say "Press Any Key To Boot From The CDrom"    - DON'T DO IT.   JUST LEAVE IT ALONE, and in a few seconds the repair process will continue normally by itself.
  If you do press a key and it starts to boot from the CD it will corrupt the operating system, and could necessitate a fresh install so that you lose all your data and

   programs.      
              I have no idea why M/Soft did that, but they do a lot of things that leave folks scratching their heads so I guess its par for the course.

When I initially installed XP, I also downloaded SP3, burned it onto a CD and installed

it. Will I have to reinstall SP3 if I repair my XP installation?

In, "File Types," I can see the, "PJP," entry. I deleted the, "PJP," entry to see if that would

work, however it reappears on restart.

On another drive with XP installed,there is no such entry listed and the issue in question

does not occur.

The drive in question does have, "24 Current Pending Sector Counts," showing in,

"Crystal Disk Info," so that may be a factor, although that number has been steady

for some time. I was wondering if the issue could be corrected by editing the registry?

Will I have to reinstall SP3 if I repair my XP installation?

If SP3 is currently installed on your main drive, then you won't have to reinstall it. A repair does not remove anything installed, just replaces main system files that are corrupted - a simple "compare and replace" procedure.  If you have any qualms, then after the repair run the SP3 disk again if you like, won't hurt anything. In fact, you may get a system message that SP3 is already installed, I'm not sure about that.

OK, now hold on.... here is something that may help you, I just found it on my trusty fav tech site, Fileinfo.com.  Also try: Filxt.com. 

You might want to try this before anything else. Always something else new to learn! I used to do graphics years ago as part of my job, but never ran across anything like this:

Thanks for the additional guidance. I have a dual boot system and doing a repair might

delete the bootloader. Also I have discovered that the saving options are showing when

it is a png file or a gif file. The, "Save as file type," is only blank with jpeg's!
