I have a mid 2011 Mac that needed a fresh install of the OS. after deleting and formatting the disk using the disk utility in the Mac I went to reinstall a FRESH OS using the disk utility. After repeated failed attempts to reinstall high Sierra (the OS i was trying to refresh) the disk utility rebooted took about 20 minutes to reset the network automatically 5en began downloading mountain lion as the OS. which also subsequently failed.

im concerned that I now have a very expensive paperweight. Please advise.

Not expensive, not a paperweight. You have to install the OS version that the machine can run with a USB install disk as stated in all of the info out on the Interwebs.https://www.google.com/search?q=bootable+usb+mac+os+installer&oq=bootable+usb+mac+os+installer&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIJCAEQABgNGIAEMggIAhAAGBYYHjIICAMQABgWGB4yCAgEEAAYFhgeMggIBRAAGBYYHjIICAYQABgWGB4yBggHEEUYPNIBCDc3NzNqMGo0qAIAsAIA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

You can try using Internet Recovery by restarting your Mac and holding Command + Option + R to reinstall the original macOS, likely Mountain Lion. If that doesn't work, create a bootable USB installer for macOS High Sierra using another Mac, then boot your Mac from the USB. Additionally, reset the PRAM/NVRAM and SMC, as these can sometimes fix installation issues. Run Disk Utility's First Aid to check for any disk errors.
