I have a Linksys EA7300 router connected to my computer, and I must confess I do not even know why.

I have no home network and my internet service is Comcast cable, I have nothing else in my house that I know of that would need that router.

All I know about routers is that every time I try to do anything with them my head starts spinning.

My question is do I really need that router, and if I do, how do I lock it so no one else can tap into it?

Also my new Dell computer tower has some kind of antenna with two wires going to it that mounts to the wall, since I have no network can that be disconnected?

Thank you for any advice!

Gary

Hi, the 2 wires are for better Wireless.  Disconnect if do not need. Save for possible future movement of system.

Need to make sure all the info from the Router has been provided.  Is this it : Linksys EA7300  https://downloads.linksys.com/downloads/userguide/EA7300_UG_INTL.pdf  There is a V1 and a V2, which do you have ?? Think one of these or both not supported anymore.  If that is the case detirmine if a Security risk.

Think you should read the manual as you can add/setup/change Security to your system.  It is added Security and if is updated and working properly and not slowing your system down then use it.

Make sure your Firmware is up to date : https://downloads.linksys.com/downloads/others/Router_Firmware_Upgrade_Instructions-v2,0.pdf

I can check what version the router is but I am wondering if I really need it at all.

I can not remember why I even installed it a few years ago.

If I don't really need it I would rather just disconnect it, it's connected to my Comcast cable router and I don't know why.

Thanks for the advice!

Gary

Routers are important if you only have one ethernet port on your Comcast modem. They serve as firewalls as well.

Or is it your computer connected to the Linksys EA7300 router?  If so, it's a whole different story.  Turn the router off for a second to see if your Internet still works.  If your Internet still works (and anyone else in your household), you can remove the router as it's not being used.

As well others that use the internet and wireless in the house.  Are they going through the modem or are they going through the router or through your computer and out.  There is various ways to set that up.

As mention you need to get the info off the router as to make and model.   You can log into the router as well and see what is going on such as firmware version what type of firewall is setup as there is usually 2 options.

It is a whole wack of security if is up to date, setup properly with the firewall.     Is one extra step up as it protects you as does Defender so nothing wrong in being more secure.

But as say it has to be setup properly and with a password or the neighbours are using it as they would your wireless.

That is the big thing I have no idea about Comcast as it is not in Canada.  I lack all your pit falls of  AT&T as well.....lol :=}

I'd recommend you just remove your Linksys router and just use Comcast's modem/router. Having two routers not specifically configured to work with each other is just creating confusion for you -- basically you're dealing with two home networks when (assuming) you only need one.

-- Remove your Linksys router completely.

-- Go into your Comcast modem/router setup menu and focus on the router options to set up and secure your home network accordingly.

https://routersecurity.org/

-- Set up whatever gadgets and devices to your new, secure network.

Later when you get more comfortable tweaking you home network settings, that's when you'll want to add in your own router. With Comcast's modem/router, it's Comcast that has oversight over your router. It's their firmware running on their device, and by you're agreeing to use it, that contractually allows them to remotely maintain it. With your own router, that isolates your home LAN from their prying eyes. (.... but don't forget Comcast still monitors everything involving your Internet access.) So it is a home, local network vs. public network matter, but your own, third-party router will have much more extensive options that you have control over. Comcast's router options on limited by Comcast.
