I have noticed lately that there are a lot of posts relating to "what program should i use to..."

Hopefully this post will help.

Some programs other members have mentioned in the past:

Microsoft Office SharePoint Web Designer 2007 and Microsoft Expression Web Designer.
Adobe Dreamweaver
FirstPage
Pagebreeze
Coffee Cup HTML editor
PhpDesigner
Notepad (don't laugh, it works!)

It will also depend on what language you are wanting to write in as to which program would be best suited for you. Obviously, you wouldn't use PhpDesigner to write HTML or Coffee Cup HTML editor to write PHP.

For beginners, I would probably stick to HTML, CSS and maybe a bit of javascript before exploring any other routes.

You might wanna add Notepad++, its a "replacement" for the original notepad, the difference is that in recognizes what language you're using (its supports more that just php, html and other website creation languages). It gives different sections/tags/or whatever you wanna name it different colors.

My toolkit consists of:

Notepad++ for coding html and php pages etc

TopStyle Lite for coding my CSS files

Paint.NET for image editing

Web Developer Server Suite for testing my PHP and MySQL locally

I do have commercial software such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash and Photoshop, but the only one of these I use regularly is Photoshop, which I mainly use for images such as buttons because Paint.NET doesn't handle layers very well.

Serif WebPlus is very easy for beginners, basically WYSIWYG but has some great features. Great Software!

There is a Free Version, here - Not sure how good that is.
The Latest Edition can be bought here - This is the one I have used, and created a few websites.

You may choose Dream Viever, Its a finest editor for HTML and CSS style sheet coding, You can aslo write JAVASCRIPT is this one. Its very easy and all features available. so u can do some design with drag drop facility.

My first WYSIWYG developer was the Dreamweaver 8... I loved it because it was easy to create the content and I currently use the CS4 version. :D

Our interface developers tend to have individual preferences when it comes to code editors, but the general feeling is that Notepad++ is a good choice. I used to use Aptana but it has become a little sluggish with recent releases. I now use Eclipse with the Aptana plugin which I really like as it allows me to setup projects.

For graphics I use Photoshop but Gimp is a good freeware alternative, and there are many other useful tools and plugins that I use everyday such as FireBug, Web Developer Toolbar, Color Contrast Anyliser, and Xamp lite server. Another important point to consider is that you need to test in as many browsers as possible (not just the latest ones), good tools for this if your using XP is multiple IE from Tredsoft, and go to Portable Apps to get legacy Firefox browsers, alternatively use Microsoft virtual machines to run different browsers on your desktop.

Personally, I like phpDesigner. Before this I used to prefer 1stPage 2000, but their latest version 1stPage 2006 is too slow for any real development. Also Notepad++ is always there to make little changes and edits.

I have been using dreamweaver since version 3 when a friend recommended it to me, i am now on CS4 i use split view, code and design
i also use Fireworks CS4
Photoshop
and to be honest just plain notepad (works for quick edits on the fly, esp if i am not at my system to run Dreamweaver)

Dreamweaver, with the right plugins can be a very powerful piece of software for website design and Adobe has a trial version of CS4 on their website, all you have to do is register for a free account and you can download and try the software.
