Looking to break a smart tv by adding apps but cant seem to add them. It seems it is locked to adding apps. I've tried several methods of adding apps but appears not meant to without other means. At the moment I only have usb and chromecast. I'd like to at the very least add another youtube to block ads. I got lucky and figured a way but want something stronger and better. Their version of youtube is weak and sad. It's lg with web os.

A lot of the websites giving advice on installing apps on an LG TV, fail to realise that LG TV's cannot run Android apps - the clue is in the title, LG Web OS.

This is proprietary to LG, and apps cannot be obtained or sideloaded.

There are a few hacking sites around, but they do not have anything of any use to offer.

I have an LG 49" TV bought 1 month ago. Looked at the YouTube app, yes it is clunky. The easiest method I can see is to browse YouTube on your phone, then cast it to the TV.

Exactly in the same position I am in. I also have 49' LG Smart tv. Mine is 4k.

I hate that stupid youtube app. It has absolutely nothing. It actually cant even load my entire lists neither. What also sucks is that you cant add any app neither. I also found out the long way that it isnt an andriod. I thought being it another os it would easier and better. LIke a Linux. I am sure there is a way to force it. I just havent tried any of them. Some say the firestick, and/ hdmi, and others. I just didnt know I had to spent on a firestick. I only have chromecast and usb at the moment. Ive been doing the casting so far but it isnt the best in my opinion, and their youtube is barebones. I finally got a way to hack that ads though. That was majorily hard and unexpected. A major problem I see is that the app itself is polluted with ads. A round about is blocking from router I suppose.

A couple of months before I got the TV (4K too), I only had an old knackered 32" TV that didn't have a working remote, so I got a Fire TV Stick Lite - Was lucky and got it on offer for £17.99. It is fairly nippy around the menus and loading apps.

I hadn't bothered connecting it to the TV as it had all that built in, but I plugged it in just now to compare the YouTube app, it looks 99% identical to the TV one.

If you did get a Firestick, you then have the choice of sideloading apps, you should be able to get a different app to play videos from YouTube.

that helps. I think I'll have to jack one. But it makes me disappointed in LG that makes you go through all this bleep just to hack bleep. I'd thought they know better to satisfy us. I looked up how smarttv's like lg come with loaded ads and trackware. Wat a piece of bleep and we are paying high end dollars for this bleep. Now we gotta rearrange their systems. Next time I'm gettin' a better tv. ffs apple still dont got a tv yet. I'll jack my from japan and it be it an advanced 8k.

A laptop and an HDMI cable ?  That's what my wife uses to watch things she can't get on the TV itself. Not ideal if it comes to needing to type into search though.

yea I agree, the tv mouse and type sucks but if you think about it it's not worst than a cell and I can use the controller which speeds things up. I think you can use a cabled or like you say an hdmi but I cant use blutooth my smart one dont have it. Im used to using the tv like a big monitor which is why Im surprised anyone would use chromecast which sucks and is limited. I used to use vga which was great but some say that hdmi is better. Good cause I couldnt complain about the vga. Looks like an hdmi is on the list.

I have my tower pc connected to the TV with a 5 metre HDMI lead, this connection method is the fastest to activate as I only have to change to the right HDMI input on the TV.

To control the PC while connected, I bought one of these hand held backlit keyboards - great in the dark.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163830222866

On this one, you can flip it over and the other side is a mouse touch pad, it does 2 finger scrolling for web pages, and if you tap and release 2 fingers at the same time you get the right click menu.

You can control 90% of windows with it, the only thing it will not do is select multiple individual items in Explorer (as in hold down CTRL and click on several different items to select them), or do drag and drop, but then for proper file management tasks I am sat in front of the PC.

K-Lite Codec pack is installed which comes with Media Player Classic, and convenient shortcut keys are programmed to keys on the hand held keyboard.

I can also connect wirelessly to the TV, in Windows 10 notification center click on 'Connect' and select the LG TV, then change connection type to 'Mirror'.

This method works ok, but there is just the hassle of connecting it every time you want to use it that way.

Try it out on your TV, I'm not sure if you need a certain level of graphics card to do it, but I have connected my sisters laptop this way ok.

I think almost any reasonably modern laptop will work. I own a moderately old Vaio - 5 or 6 years - which is currently on loan to my sister-in-law as the HDMI socket on her own laptop has gone for a long lie-down and my wife's laptop is a 3 rising 4 year old budget Lenovo.

One thought. If you connect to the TV as a second screen could you use the on-screen keyboard to control your source. After all a wireless mouse will work on almost any surface. I've never tried this but . . . !

I'd like to Thank you PaperClip!!!,

This was basically the best post I've ever had here. I didnt know about the connect feature and I tried it and was able to basically connect like you said. I've been watching bleep ever since. At first it was strange I was having connection issues where it would disconnect, I thought it was a blutooth interference so I turned it off and it worked. But then I just restarted the tv and it didnt give an issue again even with it on. The other issue I get sometimes is that it gets super slow almost to not responding on the tv though on the pc it's normal. I also had another issue where I would have both screens on and I didnt like it since I didnt need the laptop screen on cause it wouldnt go to screensaver mode but then I figured a way to have just the monitor. It was pretty good cause it gives you several monitor options. All in all I'm very happy with it and having a blast with it. Now coincidentally I just also got vga cable I've yet to try it but it's short, just 1.5 but it's a work in progress. All in all I'm having a blast, either streaming movies or comcasting. Streaming free cable like back in the day. lol. One issue I do go into which I kinda hate and run into is when streaming the pc tends to go into overload mode for awhile. Like on high demand processor and I cant cool it if I have it my lap but usually it does on the table it cools after awhile but it's annoying cause I think it's wearing the pc. Anyway, Thanks for this tip, I really appreciate and it definitely helped immensely.

Edit: I dont get the mirror option. All I get is Connect, then the display shows up. I just click it and it connects. I dont know if there is a differences or if I'm doing something another way.

When I do it on my TV, I click on Connect, Windows scans for devices and it shows up as   [LG] webOS TV NANO866NA

I click on that, the display goes blank for a bit then it is connected. I get a little toolbar at the top of the screen that is pinned by default (I clicked on the pin to disable it but it still pins itself next time), the only option in the toolbar is to disconnect.

You can unpin the toolbar, it isn't needed. Open the notification center again and click on connect, you should then see an option in blue to change the connection mode, the mirror option is called "Duplicate"

Try using the laptop on a flat tray or a chopping board if you have one big enough, this should help the vents underneath to get some air when its on your lap.

On the connection issue, you may get a better connection if you can connect to your router on the 5Ghz channel, there is normally less interference.

(Not all routers have 5Ghz)

yea windows is heavily retarded. I hate that stupid toolbar and see no purpose in it other than hide and redoing it.

I dont get duplicate. Only if I want to change the different screen settings.

Yea the chopping board idea is a good one I hadnt thought about but I'm probably going to get a laptop cooling pad. It doesnt usually go high vent except if I am streaming. A pro told me it was cause of the encoding and decoding. I dont know if doing a maintenance on it and adding thermal paste would help.

I doubt it that they have 5ghz, they're pretty cheap around here, but this was helpful. Im going to keep that in mind.

From reading my post again, I could have made it clearer - After you have connected, click on connect again, then you can see in blue writing "Change projection mode".

===EDIT===  If you cannot see the blue "Change projection mode", there is a dropdown 'V' on the right hand side of the TV name, hover over that section and it will highlight, click on it to show the options.

Now click on "Change projection mode" and you get the Project options - You can see from the second picture I have selected "Duplicate".

Paperclip:

Just wanted to say I just got cooling pad. I was so lucky because where I'm at they are not so common and I thought I would have to fork out a lot of cash. I luckily went to a second hand store and just in some cart a saw a weird looking thing and weird flat type of board. As I inspected it I couldnt believe it was what I thought it was. I felt bad cause I needed it and I thought I was taking it from someones Kart. I confirmed what it was to a worker and he confirmed and told him I took it from some kart he didnt think that matter. I tested it. It worked fine. It was kinda big and it had no switches. Not even an on and off. I've been enjoying it ever since. It cost about $10 from a cheap second hand store. It was more expensive than most items but totally worth it. I got lucky. It's kinda big but I like it. I was lucky because I wasnt really using anything with the laptop like you suggested but had already added it to my to-buy-list. I never thought I was actually going to get it and so randomly. Though it is big I like it cause it feels secure and it really doesnt  feel uncomfortable. It should now cause less strain and noise on the laptop and make it run smoother. It feels like a Dock. Maybe I shouldve gotten that instead though Im not sure if that actually works like a cooling.

Here is what I got:
