If it is just the system that wont boot, you could use a live CD http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download

I've used File Scavenger with success, Data Recovery Tool for Windows XP - http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm

Life would be simpler/better if your friends sees the merits of disk imaging or backing up.

The software by http://www.pcinspector.de is very capable. It's free, but a bit confusing.
Equally capable is the GetDataBack series at http://www.runtime.org. It costs, but is easier to use than PCInspector.

I've used both and they've worked very well for me (so well that I bought both versions of the GetDataBack series).
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's computer crash! First, I recommend trying some manual recovery methods, like checking the Recycle Bin for deleted files or using the built-in Windows "Previous Versions" feature to restore lost data. If those don't work, I highly recommend the BLR Crash PC Data Recovery Tool. I used it myself after a crash, and it effectively recovered all my important files. It’s user-friendly and very reliable, making it one of the best options out there for data recovery.

At this stage we know next to nothing about the nature of the "Crash".

There will be many solutions but it could be as simple as removing the Hard Drive, putting it in an enclosure and connecting that to another PC, to read it

You do realize that you are "necroposting" to 2008 topic . . .  I imagine that the OP has long since moved on.

Have a great day.
