Microsoft published the company's financial results for the fiscal quarter that ended on December 31, 2018, reporting revenue of $32.5 billion with a 12% YoY increase, operating income of $10.3 billion, and a net income of $8.4 billion.
Compared to the same period of the last fiscal year, Microsoft announced the following financial results:
· Revenue was $32.5 billion and increased 12%
· Operating income was $10.3 billion and increased by 18%
· Net income was $8.4 billion GAAP and $8.6 billion non-GAAP
· Diluted earnings per share was $1.08 GAAP and $1.10 non-GAAP
"Our strong commercial cloud results reflect our deep and growing partnerships with leading companies in every industry including retail, financial services, and healthcare," stated Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. "We are delivering differentiated value across the cloud and edge as we work to earn customer trust every day."
As detailed in the press release detailing the FY19 Q2 earnings, Redmond returned $9.6 billion to shareholders in the form of dividends and share repurchases during the second quarter of fiscal year 2019.
"Our solid execution delivered another strong quarter, with commercial cloud revenue growing 48% year-over-year to $9.0 billion," said Microsoft's CFO Amy Hood. "We continue to make strategic investments to capture expanding market opportunities to drive growth across our businesses."
Among other highlights, Microsoft's operating expenses reached $9.8 billion with an increase of roughly 7% year-over-year (YoY) due to commercial sales capacity and cloud engineering investments.
Cash flow also went up by 13% YoY, pushed by higher collections from customers, partially offset by higher tax and supplier payments, while the free cash flow reached $5.2 billion, experiencing a 2% YoY decrease following capital expenditures in support of Microsoft's cloud business.
The revenue for all three operating groups increased according to Microsoft's statement:
· Revenue in Productivity and Business Processes was $10.1 billion and increased 13% (up 13% in constant currency)
· Revenue in Intelligent Cloud was $9.4 billion and increased 20% (up 21% in constant currency)
· Revenue in More Personal Computing was $13.0 billion and increased 7% (up 7% in constant currency)
All revenue categories of the More Personal Computing operating group increased from Windows Commercial products, cloud services, and Surface to Gaming and search advertising, with Windows OEM revenue being the only one which dipped by 5%.
According to Microsoft's News Center, a conference call will be hosted at 2:30 PM Pacific Time and a live webcast will be available on Microsoft’s Investor Relations website.
