Chrome

Google is testing a new feature in the Chrome Canary builds that allows you to change the colors used by various user interface elements of the browser. This allows users to make the browser and its New Tab Page a colorful mess that some may find amusing, while others find painful.

In current versions of Google Chrome you already have the ability to change the background on the New Tab Page to solid colors, an uploaded image, or a variety of backgrounds offered by Google. Two new flags in the Chrome Canary build now also allow you to change the colors of open tabs, the address bar, and other user interface elements of the browser using the new "NTP customization menu version 2".

This let's you create a colorful, but quite ugly, browser window like the one below.

To enable this feature, download Chrome Canary and go to the chrome://flags screen. Now search for "customization" as shown below and enable both the "Chrome Colors menu" and "NTP customization menu version 2". Then relaunch the browser when asked.

Once the browser has been restarted, click on the + button to open a new tab and then click on the Customize button in the bottom right of the New Tab Page.

You will now be shown a screen where you can select the Background to be used by the New Tab Page. Scroll down until you see Solid colors and select it. Then select one of the offered colors.

Once selected, your New Tab Page's background will be changed to the selected solid color.

Now click on the Color and theme option, and select one of the four color choices that you wish to use for the browser's user interface elements. These choices are purple, teal, pretty, and bluish. None are particularly pleasing to the eye.

The background and colors that you select will now be used on the browser's New Tab Page as shown in the image in the beginning of the article.

The color theme selected in the "Color and Theme" section will also be used in any other tab you have open when visiting sites.

While Google is only providing four choices for the Color and Themes, I would expect as time goes on this will be changed to allow you to customize it as you want. I can only imagine the creations that will come from that.
