Trend? I don';t even know what that is.. McAfee maybe came preinstalled as a trial? I have no idea.. never used it.

I don't know what to do with this - netsh advfirewall reset - type that in cmnd?

Thanks so much for explaining everything..

I did step 1 - didn't realize no reboot required or I would've done it already.

Yes copy paste into command prompt hit enter.

You may need  to boot into safe mode for the second batch file to rename those drivers, since they are active.

Completed all 3 steps. didn't have issues. if I'd known it would restart fine, I would've done it a long time ago - sorry about that.

My computer seems to take a very long time to shut down lately... it constantly says waiting for background to close but that only lasts a second or two, it's the shutting down screen that seems to take a while... otherwise, it restarted into safe mode and after safe mode perfectly and fairly quickly :thumbup2:

The only issue after restart is that all of my start menu icons are gone.. each has a generic blank sheet icon.

Doing firewall reset now. As far as I know my 'custom setting' is just ON. (If I made any custom settings in the past I don't recall.)

I had several people tell me to replace my hard drive.. Both tests say it's fine but is it at all possible it is winding down -I don;t know if the tests would indicate that.

_________________UPDATE________________

All start menu settings gone.  (both left and right sides.)

  • The icons on left were blank sheets because it seems none of them are there.."unavailable..moved, renamed or removed."  Why would all my start menu items be gone?
  • Program called smart audio is gone (not just from the start menu but if searched it says 'application not found.')

I added them back and after 20 mins. one of them was back to being a blank sheet icon.. I clicked it and it said it had been removed and then it disappeared completely.

*The only option in 'send to' context is optical drive... but can't customize because SendTo  folder is empty!

I can reset preferences but SendTo folder being empty is not a default.

Why would all this change? Any way to restore these settings/folders?

Boot back into safe mode and rename this driver back to .sys iinstead of .bak

Elevated Command prompt

ren "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\XtuAcpiDriver.bak" "XtuAcpiDriver.sys"

The exe is not gone, you can use the everything search engine to grab copies of the programs you want and drag the .exe to the start menu task bar etc.

Sounds like the application data for programs was deleted.

Sorry - I'm not sure if I explained properly...

1)

In start menu the right side reverted to default rather than my preferences of what shows and how (ie link, drop-down etc.) while everything I had pinned to the start was showing but actually missing shortcuts (blank sheets).

Before receiving your reply I put everything back that I could remember and it's fine (including the one that went blank.. must've picked the wrong shortcut). I hadn't thought to use the everything search - which I have - would've been much easier, but I did use it to restore the audio shortcut - thank you.(Not sure why typing it in the search bar came up as not existing).

2) The Context sendto is still a problem. Is that what renaming the driver will fix?

3) At one point I had edited the registry to not see libraries and network in explorer navigation and they show again.. when I go to registry my changes are still there so I'm not sure why those two are showing in the pane.

I actually did not turn off after posting yesterday.. was afraid it was a fluke.

Thank you.

Never mind renaming the driver, leave it alone.
You will need to reboot after the steps in this link
https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/28677-new-context-menu-remove-restore-default-menu-items.html

Is this the only issue left now?

I had done this a very long time ago:

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/35627-libraries-folder-add-remove-navigation-pane.html

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/39699-network-add-remove-navigation-pane.html

and when checking the registry it still shows the change I made so I'm not sure why those items are showing (libraries, network and ms word). The only place I see the nav. pane (by choice) is when saving... Oddly, when saving the screenshot attached only network is in the nav. pane but if saving a word doc libraries, network and word are there.. (in fact sometimes they're there and sometimes not - I don't get it.)

These instructions restore default context.. my only issue is the SendTo only allows optical drive - will restoring the default context put these missing options back in the shell:sendto folder so I can choose them to be in the context?

Like I said, I haven't turned off again so I can't tell but aside from a pretty long shutting down issue it started fine yesterday.

I know the nav. pane and context are irrelevant to the original matter. I don't want to screw around with anything just in case (like just right-clicking delete).

No rush - I really appreciate your help.

***UPDATE***

rebooted to see if it might fix the whole navigation panel issue. The startup seemed much slower than yesterday but no BSOD..

startmenu:

Items in navigation pane still there (even though registry change listed above was done long ago to eliminate them), and one of the 'new' start menu shortcuts I placed from 'everything' is again a white sheet.. it's fine, I don't need it there, so I removed it.. it's just odd since I had it there before.

sendTo:

Checked the 'default' SendTo folder and the items were there so I copied the ones I wanted from C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows/SendTo into C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows/SendTo .. Seems to have worked.. I hope it was OK to do as a fix.

I'm not sure if the long wait to shut down is related in any way to the BSOD issue I had/have.

Thank you.

Press Windows Key + R on your keyboard. This will open the Run dialog box.
In the Run dialog, type shell:sendto and press Enter.
This command will take you directly to the SendTo folder, where you can manage shortcuts for sending files.
In the SendTo folder, right-click on an empty space.
Select New, then click on Shortcut from the context menu.

You can add whatever you want this way.

Using the everything search should be faster.
Type what you want.
When it pops up
Right click it and select copy as path.
Add the file path after clicking blank spot in shell:sendto

As far as the start menu. Elevated command prompt:
I wrote what each command does.
This will reset the start menu, then hopefully all will be well.

:: Delete all pinned items from the Start Menu
del /F /Q "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu\*"

:: Restore default pinned items
xcopy "C:\DefaultPinnedItems\*" "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu\" /S /E /Y

:: Restart Explorer to apply changes
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

Then you can add anything to the start menu you like. It should stay after this.

As far as the slow boot time.

What's in start up.
Scheduled task view.

Clean up with Privazer, or system ninja

Unused programs? GeekUninstaller

I think the startmenu is OK now.. I think I wasn't properly pinning things there. Hopefully it all stays. My startup has the bare minimum as far as I know but I will check it.. it's The shut down that takes forever after saying task host has to close.

*My main issue that I don't know how to fix is why the items are showing in navigation pane since the reboot when they never were before.. Like I said, I had made a registry change years ago to remove them from the pane and that change seems to still be intact - I checked the registry - yet ever since the reboot those items show anyway. I don't know how to remove them.

Is geekUninstaller better than Revo?

system ninja  - is this easy to use without accidentally screwing up the computer if you don't know what you're doing?

Does this mean the BSOD was not in any way related to hard drive?

**Something is really kind of screwed up now with all settings. things I change revert back or don't change. If I change a folder icon it does not change but if I open it the new icon shows in explorer etc.

why the items are showing in navigation pane since the reboot when they never were before..

Can you post a screen shot of what you are talking about. The items specifically you want removed and the entire area they reside.

Taskhost......

Try a clean boot and see if the shut down issue stops.

It may be a program or service causing the issue.

Geek uninstaller is the best IMO

System ninja is fine for novice users

Let’s get the machine in perfect order before I answer the last question

1 Technically, yes, this is my only issue as it makes no sense that my tweak to the registry is no longer working after reboot.

Years ago I followed the instructions in the Seven forum links I included in the previous post.. to remove network and libraries as options in the nav. pane. They are showing again when I choose ‘save as’ (like a word doc). When I check the registry tweaks my changes are still there yet the two options are back (and also includes an Office word option). Attached is an image showing these in the pane - they did not show before the initial reboot. I would be happy to just redo it except that the registry tweak is still there showing it's already been done.

Sorry if I’m not explaining properly. See attached image of what didn't used to show in the pane.

2) Not an issue but a question:

I used privazer.. (not sure the diff. Between it and ninja).. I still have a lot of random folders (most in programData )... that aren't an issue but I noticed them only because I thought the batch was supposed to remove remnants of old, downloaded crap.. like:

  • FRST folder (I deleted)
  • KPRM (C drive) not sure what it is.
  • I have a wondershare recoverit folder (no memory of getting it so it MUST be really old).
  • sysdev labratories (I don’t know what it is but a shortcut to it was on my 'all programs' start menu after initial reboot.. I deleted the shortcut but I do have a folder)

*Also, wasn’t trend micro in the batch you gave? I see a folder called trend micro and one called trend micro installer (see attached). And I discovered a folder called 'cleaner one pro updater'.. with in an exe file in it.. I Googled and it's made by Trend Micro. ( AppData/local)..

I searched trend micro in 'everything' and the folders are from 2024 and several instances tied to Firefox profiles listed with today's date.  Apparently it's a security toolbar for Firefox (maybe it comes with updates for Firefox extended support?) but I don't see it listed as an extension in Firefox. See attached screenshot from 'Everything.'

These things do not show up on any uninstaller programs – is it safe to just manually delete these folders?

3) Folder:

No need to reply to this now, as per your post - I just wanted to add it before I forget.

I created a folder on the desktop and customized the icon from the default. When I right-clicked and chose 'properties' the icon showing in the window was not the same as it was on the desktop. Under 'customize' I clicked 'restore default' and it changed the 'properties' version to what showed on the desktop. Seems OK now but an odd, new glitch. Attached is an image showing what I'm trying to explain.

No rush... Thank you.

BSOD on startup!! See attached.

Based on numerous suggestions I bought a new hard drive last week and was about to return it today but then this.

I googled the error  c:\users\user\appdata\local\temp\wer-33602-0.sysdata and only 2 results..about ram though. I'm no expert but this isn't due to conflicting programs is it? Is there any way to know (I don't know if I should return the drive)? Thank you!
