Sorry confess my ignorance as far as Aero is concerned. How can I check?

But there are also unknown unknowns- the ones we don't know we don't know

The Windows Aero theming engine is running when your graphics feature glass-like transparent window elements and windows which grow when they open and shrink when they close. From the looks of your screenshots, though, it would appear you are using a Windows Classic theme in which those graphic effects are disabled.

But I don't think your issue has anything to do with Aero's status. I think maybe forced High Contrast is enabled, or at least a High Contrast theme has been selected. Right-click your desktop and click Personalize. You can check your theme settings there.

When Aero is having issues, it will default to Windows Classic aka Windows 95/98/2000 mode for Graphics.

Download and install Speccy - https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

Run it, and then go to File and Publish Snapshot. Post the resulting link in your next reply.

And

Download and install min-toolbox from here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

With the following:

Last 10 error messages from the logs
Installed Application
Problematic Devices
List users and partitions

Then copy and paste the contents from the text file that is created into your next reply.

When Aero is having issues, it falls back to Windows Basic, not Windows Classic. Classic has to be set deliberately.

I seem to have "stumbled upon" a solution which has a bearing on the previous posts (BeigeBochs #17): If I navigate to Control Panel ... Appearance and .. Personalisation it gives me the option to switch graphically between High Contrast and non High Contrast images. Some of the latter are very similar. I can toggle between either High Contrast and no colours, or colours and non High Contrast. But not both simultaneously. I suppose as a compromise I have seen worse.

Yes I could do - but would that change anything?

If your intention is to reduce eyestrain, perhaps you could try adjusting your monitor.

In newer versions of Windows, there is a Night Mode you can use to reduce eyestrain which makes your monitor's colors warmer.

But since Windows 7 doesn't have this feature, the next best thing is to look for warm color settings built into the monitor itself, or try reducing the blue level to see if that helps.

Just at present the legibility / contrast is not too bad so I could live with it. If Speccy / MiniToolbox could bring an advance on that within W7 limitations that would be a possibility.  But I am a fan of "If it ain't broke.."

Posting on a geek forum with an issue means it's broken and you need help fixing it.
