The original poster neither mentions nor implies the use of a VPN...................... Windows 7—a system most VPN providers don't support well—is puzzling. NordVPN serves as a prime example of this.

The OP probably didn't mention a VPN because he didn't think it was relevant.

NordVPN claim that their VPN is actually fully supported for Windows 7 - see here.

When I accessed the MS Catalog using a VPN and switching between different servers, the text was first in Korean, then Japanese, and now Russian:

How do you explain the foreign text the OP was getting on that website?

I do  however agree with your other statements. While it's of course not ideal to be running an unsupported version of Windows, current AV solutions still offer a high level of protection. Taking AVG as an example, it will provide real-time behaviour, email, URL and file scanning etc.

Hey guys :) Thanks a lot for your answers and suggestions :) I was busy and couldn't reply to your messages. Now I will try to reply most of your messages without multi quote.

1. I know the risks of Windows 7. I am not planing to change to other operating systems soon so I just want the best protection I can have.

2. I use Opera browser and it has a integrated free vpn but that vpn was not active when I saw Russian/French texts. Also that free vpn has Asia, Europe, North/South America, Best Location (options don't show which country) options. I suspect that opera changes ip even without vpn because sometimes I can download files from free download sites without required waiting time (these sites ask you to wait for a time before redownloading) Btw I also use Firefox browser (has no vpn) and I just checked the Windows download site again with it and Opera. Firefox shows Russian texts and Opera doesn't. What do you guys think now ?

3. If installing that Windows 7 security roll up pack won't cause me problems (because I already have the newer sp2 updates it installs) I will install it. Do you know anything about this ?

Download and install KB4474419 from here (definitely not a Russian website): https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=kb4474419%20Windows%207

Assuming you have no real-time antivirus, do not install Malwarebytes. Instead, install Microsoft Security Essentials 4.10.209.0 (definitely not a Russian website): https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201
Patches? We don't need no stinkin Patches!

1) it is not you that needs protection it us needing protection from you.  You are a danger to everyone on the internet including your friends and family.

3 ) is a rollup. It either works or it does not.  It would update only things that need updating or is missing f it works.  The roll up is stuff after SP2.

Update any C++ 2005, 2010, 2012, 2015.  .net is being phased out, if have update it.

There is no official SP2 (Service Pack 2) for Windows 7. There is, however, something like that called the Convenience Rollup, a.k.a. KB3125574, which applies all updates for Windows 7 w/SP1 up through April 2016. Microsoft released this as 1) a way of getting fresh Windows 7 w/SP1 installations up to date at that time in a convenient manner and 2) improve the performance of Windows Update by saving it from having to parse a massive five or six years of update information which had accumulated since the release of SP1. Even on a 2020 install, KB3125574 was quite useful in setting up a fresh installation of Windows 7.

Don't miss update KB4490628 to be able to install all security updates released through January 2020!

Note : @BeigeBochs  the Rollup was mentioned and URL provided in Post #4 and was also discussed again.

Need to always start at the beginning : =}

PK, I don't think I should be expected to click every link in the topic. But for your pleasure, I went ahead and visited the linked webpage; and it also referred to the update erroneously as "SP2 for Windows 7".

I noticed mention of a "security roll up pack" in post 17. This was probably referring to the Convenience Rollup, but I probably missed the association since there are several security rollups.

What do you mean .NET is being phased out? You do know there is multiple versions of .NET / .NET Framework? The latest being .NET 8 and still receiving mainstream support from Microsoft.

.NET Framework 4.6.2 is still receiving updates until 2027, with later versions being supported until the foreseeable future. The earliest public legacy applications will likely be .NET Framework 4.7.2 and 4.8.*.

Hey guys sorry :( I was busy in real life so I couldn't reply. Thanks for your answers :) I remembered something.. Since my processor is new auto windows update doesn't allow me to update windows 7. My only option is to install that security package (nicknamed sp2) Are you sure it won't cause me trouble ?

I have Avira Free Security. Is it really better than Avira ? Btw I installed it then it removed avira automatically (although i decided not to remove it when it asked).Downloaded some updates then I checked new updates and gave the error reconnect to internet or something like that. At the same time unsupported hardware error message popped up (looks like installing and updating this reopened automatic updates. I have to close it again to stop pop up message)

I would not suggest installing MSE as a security package, since I don't believe it is an effective choice.

See Info.

On my own Win 7 system, I have Malwarebytes Premium 5 installed and it has me convinced that it does a reasonable job on my Win 7.

Info.

All of the warnings others have posted about running an unsupported Win 7...exist.  Each Win 7 user today must evaluate the risk that running Win 7 poses on her/his own system.

I would expect others to not be so arrogantly rude and demanding.   Again it is referred as a Roll-up Pack and is refereed by some as what would be a SP2 if one was released.

If it was not phrased to everyone's satisfaction too bad. It was meant as a look-it up and will see it as that.

Is not that i specifically care what happens to Win7 it was great using it but is sticking around with it's ugly interface far to long and puts everyone in danger.

A mention does not mean I am giving detailed info. It is another look it up : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/microsoft-net-framework

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/79379/the-lifecycle-of-microsoft-visual-c-redistributabl

So much for hissy fits

Ok Thanks :) I have installed the Avira Free Security again  :thumbsup2: Btw looks like Avira has removed offline installers from their site.

There's a project which counters the block in Windows 7's Windows Update which stops updates on computers with unsupported processors, which you will find on GitHub if you search hard enough

You'll still need to manually install KB4490628 and KB4474419 (in that order) before installing all other updates, including KB3125574 (the not-SP2).

MOD edit - linking to URLs designed to get round security or copyright issues is not allowed.

Counter argument: The software I linked to does not compromise the security or copyright of Windows 7.  Regarding security, stopping updates to a computer with an unsupported processor was itself a threat to the security of that computer.  The software I linked to was the opposite of such a threat.  And regarding copyright, the software does not enable illicit installation of Windows 7 on any computer.  And installing a legal copy of Windows 7 on a system with an "unsupported processor" is not a violation of the EULA.  Remember, many hardware manufacturers provided Windows 7 support software and drivers for many of these systems equipable with these processors.
