Hello,

I have had my computer for about 12 years. I am thinking about finally building a new machine. Can someone please assist me with a decent gaming system? My budget would be around $1000- 1100.

What are the specs of the computer you are using now? "decent" can be variable per user.

To get an idea of some prebuilt pcs on sale now...you can customize by choosing different hardware on that page.

Depends on what you like.

Myself am a Intel Person.     If money is driving force then you go AMD.

Note : Look up all processor spec sheets by name (Google) will tell you fastest ram speed that is compatible to the Chip.

Just go to Bestbuy : https://www.google.com/search?q=bestbuy+new+york with some knowledge.

Note : branded Systems (HP/DELL/LENOVO) = cheapest bulk parts available at the time of it's making

That's awesome.

So, Is my PC still good enough for a few months? I was looking into the new Intel chip but I heard it's bad news.
Thanks

I won't provide you with specifics here, but I will give you some general guidance that you can use for current and future use.

Tools:

  • PC Part Picker. Use this website to build your setup, it will help you with compatibility concerns.
  • Be careful with new egg, read about the warranties - buy from big box stores where possible, BestBuy offers price matching IIRC.
  • Utilize the upcoming Black Friday sales and Cyber Monday deals.

The CPU:

  • Mid range is preferable. More threads = more things your CPU can do at once.
  • Frankly, Intel has had many technical and security issues over the years - my personal preference is AMD. Not saying AMD is perfect, but its had limited problems for me and others it would seem (feel free to call me out w/ specifics if you have any specific cases or data)
  • Expect to pay $300-$450 for a quality CPU.

The GPU:

  • Again, mid range is a-okay. The only real reason to go extra beefy and spend a grand is if you have use for cracking, HEAVY AI generation, etc. These are high-performance options, you do not need this for the 95% of games you will be playing.
  • Shop around a bit, but keep in mind if you find a crazy cheap option through a random redistributer - your support and warranty might suffer. This will likely be anywhere from $500-$750 and is on par for most pricey part alongside your CPU.

Storage Options:

  • You have a lot of flexibility here. You could go for an SSD here or an M.2 - Honestly the speeds for m.2s are nice, but you'll pay more for it.
  • Most importantly, plan what you want to do with configurations here. I personally have a smaller 1tb drive for my main C drive but then have another ssd specifically for games. (If your pc decided to do a backflip onto its neck, you'll still have the drive filled with your games separated. It's handy and easier to maintain storage usage this way in my own opinion)
  • I've had the best luck and reliability with Samsung and Western Digital. Kingston and Crucial are also widely used.

RAM:

  • In todays age, I almost always recommend 16gb if you're a power user or are running "big boy" games - you can get by with 8gb for a while if money is tight, upgrade later.
  • RAM is fairly cheap

Power Supply:

  • I would recommend 750w for a moderate build, but you can't go wrong with buying up to a 1000w PSU (Power Supply Unit) - if you get a beefier cpu or gpu, you'll need "moar powah"!
  • I personally recommend Cooler Master, but I've heard good things about Corsair's offerings as well. Make sure that the PSU is rated well - higher ratings mean that it uses power more efficiently, which will save you on your electricity bills.

Peripherals:

  • Buy buy buy on Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals. These often have a good amount of mark up, the deals are ideal.
  • Monitors:
    • Avoid curved monitors - they often have bugs and issues with some games, this could change/improve in the future.
    • Look for at least a 120 refresh rate - any slower and you will get dogged on in games - be warned once you go to 120, you'll never go back :P
    • Brands across the board are pretty reasonable/standardized - no specific vendors to call out here
  • Keyboard/Mouse:
    • USB 3.0
    • Wired or wireless, up to you - but you will pay in the form of charging/batteries for wireless. The performance between wired and wireless is no longer a factor, they're very very comparable unless you're a "cracked out" competitive gamer.
    • Macros are nice if you're a power user, do graphic design, coding, etc. but not necessary. Media controls are a plus.
    • Consider a mouse with removable/adjustable weights if you have room left in your budget.
  • Microphone:
    • Again, Black Friday/Cyber Monday. HyperX has gotten quite popular and usually has deals that are borderline steals haha.
    • Look for USB 3.0 mics w/ a headphone jack
      • This means you can plug whatever headphones you want in
      • Wireless headphones are a racket, in my opinon, and mean more ports used, extra software, etc. Bleh.)

Motherboard:

  • Don't cheap out on this. I repeat, do not cheap out on this.
  • This bad boy runs everything. Buy as modern as you can, and go midrange unless you plan on upgrading to a beefier setup.
  • This way, you won't have to rip everything out if you need to upgrade it because it doesn't have modern sockets on it. Invest here.
