I'm using Microsoft Word 2000 on Windows XP - and just run into a problem with page numbering. I opened one of my Word docs and noticed that the page numbers on my headers were now shaded grey. I checked my other word documents and it was the same format issue with all of them.

I tried to get rid of the shading but can't seem to clear it. In fact, I think I made it worse. Now it just says: {PAGE }

Does anyone know how to get it back to regular page numbering? I'm not having any luck.

Thanks in advance.

No, all of the Word docs on my system are coming up with shaded numbering. The same thing will also crop up if I start a new document.

I already tried uninstalling Word and reinstalling it again. I also tried deleting the page number, closing the doc, and then adding the page number again. Neither of those made any difference.

O.K. - I just figured this one out. On the menu, I went to Tools / Options / View / Show - and turned off Field Codes which also got rid of the field shading. I'm back to regular page numbering again... Crisis is averted.
